The Ask
Learning and People Development – Leading in Complexity
CGC was engaged to work with the client to customize our Leading in Complexity workshop to enable leaders in their project teams to Develop skills for sensemaking and adaptive leadership in complex environments. The goal for this learning program was for CGC to build capacity with the client’s organization to ensure they could continue with implementing their strategy.
Approach
Discovery and interviewing to customize exercises to make them applicable for the client.
Methodology
Human Systems Dynamics and Complexity Theory
Discover
CGC worked with the client to determine the purpose of the workshop and the audience for the workshop. We defined the type of capacity that needed to be developed to customize the course.
Define
CGC conducted a detailed review of the current state processes for leave management, while focusing energies on developing relationships with all stakeholders. CGC used the SCARF model to navigate working sessions and design decisions to ensure all participants felt safe to provide information that would contribute to the project’s success. From the resulting “as-is analysis”, opportunities for process improvements were identified. With these themes, CGC conducted several workshops with all stakeholders to design the future state.
Design and Develop
CGC customized our Leading in Complexity program to align with the client’s strategy for Indigenous inclusion in program development. We developed exercises for the cohort to work with to build that internal capacity within their team.
Deliver
The course was delivered both in person and virtually over 6 weeks. We had 35 participants join us for this course. The theory delivered was followed with in-person labs for practice and a show of course understanding by the participants.
Debrief
After the delivery of the course, we had a course evaluation completed by each participant. Of the 35 participants, 30 found they were using the concepts they learned in their day-to-day program work. 17 used the tools as a primary toolkit for their project planning. The Client found engagement had increased in their teams and that staff were reporting improved understanding of their landscape.
Lessons Learned
This engagement reinforced CGC’s approach to:
- Tailor workshops with a clear purpose and audience in mind.
- Customize content to align with client strategies. Build internal capacity through practical exercises.
- Combine in-person and virtual delivery for ease of access.
- Evaluate impact and adapt based on feedback for continuous improvement.
